About Poster Art

Since the second half of the 19th century, poster art, with its unique charm, has established its place in the visual communication system. The famous Japanese designer Ikko Tanaka said, "A poster is a paper filled with information…As a medium of international communication, a poster contains distinctive techniques and emotions. A remarkable piece of work could across borders and enhance mutual understandings. In recent years, poster has become a kind of collection in various countries because of its epochal character and endurance."

If graphic designing is the "aristocrat" in the designing field, poster should be called the "aristocrat" of the graphic designing. Poster can best represent the characteristics of graphic designing in terms of graphic, text, layout, and other design languages, and its development can become the main threads of the graphic designing history.

Performing Arts Poster

Poster first appeared as a form of public art that was aimed to publicize operas and music dramas. As it developed, poster art began to have a significant impact on the society. Famous designers from various countries began to design different posters, combining performing arts with designing arts. While achieving its function, designers infuse personal style and originality into the poster, interpreting the performing arts with a superb taster and visual languages, making poster more appreciable and containing more information.

In 1891, Le Moulin Rouge, designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for a performance, was the earliest poster in the world. Performing arts poster, as its name suggests, is designed for opera, play, dance drama, jazz, symphony and other stage shows. Thanks to designers' exquisite awareness of art and their powerful expression of the theme image, the poster conveys unique visual symbols, which become many dazzling pearls in the history of poster, even in the world design history.
